10 Spring Activities for Kids

Spring is the perfect time to get outside, explore nature and try new things with your kids. From simple activities at home to local days out around Swindon, here are 10 easy ideas to make the most of the season.

1. ๐ŸŒฑ Plant Seeds

One of those activities that sounds lovely… and then gets messy fast. Start with something easy like cress or sunflowers so you can see results quickly.

2. ๐Ÿฆ† Feed the ducks

A simple one that always works, ducks, fresh air and a playground after. Lydiard Park, Coate Water and Jubilee Lake are perfect for this – and oats or sweetcorn are better than bread.

3. ๐Ÿฅš Decorate eggs

A good one for a rainy afternoon and requires very little planning. Whatever you do, don’t mention glitter.

4. ๐Ÿ‘ Lambing season

A proper spring classic: tiny lambs and lots of “aww” moments. Roves Farm and Cotswold Farm Park are great for this.

5. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Bonfire

You don’t need much for this… just a few marshmallows, some sticks and a little fire. Even if it’s a bit chilly, wrap up warm and head outside for half an hour.

6. ๐ŸŽจ Paint Pottery

Another one for a grey day. The Little Pottery Painting Co. and Q Ceramics both have seasonal pieces like bunnies, chicks and egg bowls – and you get to take something home at the end.

7. ๐ŸŒณ Scavenger Hunt

A simple way to make a walk more interesting – either an I spy scavenger hunt or just an empty egg box for collecting little bits like moss, rocks and pine cones. Tree Tools for Schools have a variety of lovely printable sheets.

8. ๐Ÿž Build a bug hotel

Use what you’ve collected – it doesn’t have to be fancy (bugs are famously not fussy). A small box or even an old juice carton opened on one side, filled with your scavenger treasures… job done.

9. ๐Ÿช Kite flying

Not just an autumn activity – a bit of wind is all you need, and spring in the UK usually delivers. Uffington White Horse or Barbury Castle are perfect for this, and even the event field in Lydiard is great on a windy day.

10. ๐Ÿงบ First picnic of the year

Still a bit cold, but worth it on a sunny day. The Town Gardens and The Lawns are perfect for this, especially when the spring flowers are out.
